Character & aroma
Aromatic, bitter and slightly sweet, with a dry, hay-like note. The flowers are milder and more fragrant than the leaves, but still distinctly medicinal rather than culinary.
Traditional uses

Internal use
- Fever support – commonly used in teas to encourage gentle sweating
- Cold & flu support – often combined with elderflower or peppermint
- Digestive bitter – stimulates appetite and digestive secretions
- Circulatory support – traditionally used to help regulate blood flow
Yarrow flowers were preferred over leaves when a gentler preparation was wanted.
External use
- Skin washes & compresses – for irritated or inflamed skin
- Facial steams – used for congestion and sinus discomfort
- Bath infusions – traditionally used for muscle tension and circulation
Common preparations
Herbal infusion (tea)
- Use 1–2 teaspoons dried flowers per cup
- Steep 5–10 minutes, covered
Steam inhalation
- Add a small handful to hot water and inhale vapour
Oil infusions
- Flowers steeped in oil for balms and salves
The flowers infuse more cleanly than leaves and are less likely to taste harsh.
