500g of Organic Currants packed in our plant-based cellulose, compostable packaging.
Currants (often called Zante currants) are small, dark dried grapes. They’re dried from a naturally tiny, seedless grape, resulting in a more intense flavour and firmer texture than raisins.
Flavour & texture
Deeply sweet with a sharp, slightly tangy edge. Firmer and drier than raisins, with a concentrated, almost wine-like fruitiness.
Common culinary uses
- Baking – scones, fruit loaves, Eccles cakes
- Traditional British puddings – Christmas pudding, mincemeat
- Biscuits – rock cakes, buns
- Savoury dishes – pilafs, couscous, stuffings
- Salads – grain or leaf-based for sweet contrast
Currants distribute very evenly in baking due to their size.
Using currants
- Soak briefly if you want a softer texture
- Dust in flour before adding to cake batters
- Add early in baking — they hold their shape well
- Balance with fat or spice to soften their sharpness
Tip: Currants take well to soaking in tea, citrus juice, or alcohol.
