Walnuts are the edible seeds of the Juglans tree, most commonly the English walnut (Juglans regia), and are known for their rich, slightly bitter flavour and distinctive appearance, with two halves that resemble the shape of a brain. They are encased in a hard, rough shell that must be cracked open to reveal the nut inside. Walnuts are often sold raw, roasted, or in chopped form, and their mild, earthy taste adds depth to a variety of dishes.
Walnuts are incredibly nutritious, rich in omega-3 fatty acids (specifically alpha-linolenic acid or ALA), protein, fiber, and antioxidants, such as vitamin E. They are also a good source of minerals, including magnesium, phosphorus, and copper. The high content of omega-3 fatty acids makes walnuts particularly beneficial for heart health, brain function, and reducing inflammation in the body.
In cooking, walnuts are highly versatile and can be used in both sweet and savoury recipes. They are often added to baked goods like cakes, cookies, and muffins, or used as a topping for salads, oatmeal, and yoghurt. Walnuts are also a key ingredient in pesto and can be incorporated into savoury dishes like stir-fries, grain bowls, or vegetable sides. Due to their rich, slightly bitter flavour, they pair well with fruits, cheeses, and dark chocolate in desserts. Walnuts are also pressed for their walnut oil, which is used in salad dressings and cooking for its nutty flavour.
