Pitted dates are a versatile and nutritious ingredient that adds natural sweetness and depth of flavour to a variety of dishes. Whether enjoyed on their own as a snack or incorporated into recipes, pitted dates offer a delicious and wholesome option for those seeking a sweet and nutritious treat.
Pitted dates are dried (or semi-dried) fruits of the date palm with the stone removed. Naturally very sweet, they’ve been used as a food staple and sweetener for thousands of years.
Flavour & texture
Deeply sweet with caramel, honey and toffee notes. Soft, sticky and chewy; some varieties are firmer and drier, others almost syrupy.
Common culinary uses
- Snacking – eaten as they are
- Baking – cakes, loaves, biscuits, energy bars
- Natural sweetener – blended into pastes or syrups
- Stuffed dates – with nuts, cheese, or nut butter
- Breakfasts – porridge, yoghurt, smoothies
- Savoury dishes – tagines, rice dishes, salads
Dates add sweetness and moisture without refined sugar.
Using pitted dates
- Chopped – for baking and salads
- Soaked – soften in warm water or tea before blending
- Blended – make date paste for baking or sauces
- Cooked – simmer gently; they break down easily
Tip: A short soak makes dates easier to blend and mellows their sweetness.
